The Environmental & Consumer Compliance Organization (ECCO), a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring the safety and quality of cannabis products in California, has released the results of its first audit. Launched in December 2024, ECCO's mission is to foster consumer confidence through rigorous testing and certification of cannabis products. The organization's initial cohort includes nine certified members, such as Raw Garden, Noble Pacific, and Jetty Extracts, all of whom have successfully passed tests for over 100 contaminants.
ECCO's certification process involves random testing of products purchased from California retailers, ensuring compliance with the organization's high standards. This initiative not only promotes trust and accountability within the cannabis community but also allows certified brands to display an ECCO Certification sticker on their packaging, signaling their commitment to safety and quality. The audit results, including those from non-member brands, have been made publicly available to enhance transparency.
Interestingly, the audit revealed that not all non-member brands met ECCO's stringent standards, with some products containing harmful pesticides like Chlorfenapyr, which poses significant health risks. This finding highlights the critical need for industry-wide adherence to safety protocols to protect consumers.
In addition to the audit results, ECCO announced the appointment of Jennifer Lujan as its new Executive Director. With a background in cannabis advocacy and regulatory compliance, Lujan is poised to lead ECCO in its mission to elevate industry standards and empower consumers with safe, high-quality cannabis products. Her leadership comes at a crucial time as ECCO continues to expand its certification program and address emerging contaminants and risks in the cannabis market.
The implications of ECCO's work are far-reaching, offering a model for self-regulation that could inspire similar initiatives nationwide. By setting and enforcing high standards, ECCO not only safeguards consumer health but also strengthens the legal cannabis industry's credibility and sustainability.
